| Urumqi Plans an International “Logistics Hub” for Central Asia |

| Urumqi is planning to leverage its geographical advantages, promote regional integration of modern logistics, and build itself into an international “logistics hub” connecting China and Central Asia, Naim Yasin, Mayor of Urumqi, said today. According to Naim Yasin’s address on the Central Asia Trade Forum 2007, Urumqi was an important city on the acient Silk Road; today it is a central city on the Eurasia Land Bridge, and Xinjiang’s pivot of freight transport to Central Asia. It now has a population of more than two million, one of the largest in the Central Asia region. Urumqi, the capital city of Xinjiang Province, borders on eight Central Asian countries and boasts a well-developed transportation system. It has over a hundred domestic and international airways and seven national-level ports, which have laid a sound basis for the development of modern logistics. As the economy thrives on the Eurasia Land Bridge, Urumqi is emerging as a pivot connecting China and Central Asia. According to statistics, Urumqi has now in place two national-level development zones, one export-oriented processing zone, five category-two ports, nearly 200 commodity markets, and thus has acquired the capacity to become a platform for China to export directly to Central, South and Western Asia as well as Europe. All relevant parties are preparing for the establishment of this “logistics hub”.
